Renter’s Insurance

Category: Our Blog

Today we are going to take a look at a very undersold and overlooked type of policy; the renter’s insurance policy. Almost two-thirds of Americans living in rental properties are uninsured. In a survey done by Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, 1000 renters were surveyed 644 people said “no.” A common misconception is the thought that renter’s insurance is expensive. In reality it ranges from about $100-200 for the entire year, roughly $12 bucks a month, or about $0.40 a day.

Now, I know what you’re thinking to yourself “It’s not required in my apartment complex.” Okay, so let’s take an example: say you live in an apartment and your friend comes over to hang out. You two have some drinks, and your friend trips and falls breaking his arm. Who will cover his medical expenses? That’s right, you will have to, and you are liable. Now you have to pay out every month for something that wasn’t your fault and you could have saved yourself the hassle had you bought renter’s insurance.

I would like you to make a mental tally in your head of the following things and how much they are worth and how much it would cost to replace them: furniture, television, stereo, computer, jewelry, clothing, and other items of importance. Most likely it is more than $100 dollars. Is it worth less than $30,000, because you can protect up to that much for around $100 dollars. That covers theft, vandalism, fire or lightning, hurricane, or tornado, explosions, smoke damage, broken glass fragments, or water leaks.

Some renters think they are covered under the landlords policy, which is false, a landlord’s policy covers the building and structure. All the items inside are left to the renter to cover.  Because when your house or apartment catches fire or is broken into you can focus on your family’s safety and not have to worry about getting your tv or furniture out.
